Chapter Twenty-One

Terrance Gage steered his Navigator out of the prison’s parking lot and settled in for the long drive up to Quantico, satisfied he and Bridget would have plenty of time to discuss her return to the BAU after the scheduled Second Strangler task force meeting that afternoon.

He'd made the mistake of checking his voicemail while he’d waited for Bridget to conduct her interview with Landry, and had gotten an earful from Anne, who was furious at him for missing her dinner party on Saturday.

Stewing over his sister’s pronouncement that she’d made Sarge a vet appointment for the following day, Gage wanted time to think through the situation before he made any promises. The two-hour drive should give him that chance.

But just when he’d started to relax, Vivian called.

“Feel free to take it,” Bridget said, spotting the caller’s name on the Navigator’s big display. “It won’t bother me.”

Gage hesitated, his finger hovering over the hands-free button. Catching Bridget’s questioning look out of the corner of his eye, he inhaled deeply and answered the call.

“Vivian, how are you?” he said in a painfully cheerful voice. “Bridget Bishop and I are driving toward Quantico now. Will we see you at the task force meeting this afternoon?”

He held his breath, listening to what sounded like dead air.

“Vivian, you still there?” he asked, hoping she’d hung up.

“I’m here.”

Her voice was curt.

“And yes, I’ll be at the meeting this afternoon. I was calling to confirm the meeting location.”

Exhaling in relief, Gage glanced at Bridget with a smile.

“It’s the same conference room as last time,” he said. “BAU Conference Room 3. See you there.”

He disconnected the call before Vivian could say anything else. He’d have to deal with the fallout later.

“Did Charlie forget to include the location when she sent out the meeting request?” Bridget asked, sounding concerned.

“No, the location was on there,” Gage quickly assured her. “I guess Vivian must have missed it.”

Hoping Bridget wouldn’t call Charlie to ask, he winced as he thought of the agent’s call the day before.

Vivian had assured him Charlie had no idea she was the one who had answered his phone, but Gage had his doubts.

Charlie Day is no fool. I wish I could say the same for myself.

He glanced over at Bridget, sure she’d be staring back at him with accusing eyes, but she’d already gone back to reading through her file and making notes in preparation for the meeting, apparently no longer thinking of Vivian’s awkward call or Gage’s strange reaction to it.

Once again berating himself for carrying on an illicit affair and risking his reputation with his fellow agents and colleagues, Gage promised himself he’d end things with Vivian as soon as he had the opportunity.

And when Vivian walked into the BAU Conference Room later that afternoon with green eyes blazing and her mouth set in an angry red line, Gage could see she was having second thoughts about their relationship as well.

Averting his gaze, he turned around to see Charlie Day staring at him from
